Yorkshire Water, formed in 1975, is the main UK subsidiary of the Kelda Group, which provides water and waste water services to customers in the UK. Yorkshire Water manages the collection, treatment and distribution of water, supplying around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water each day to 1.7 million households – that’s the equivalent of a glass of water for every person on the planet! 78% of its water supply is from rivers and reservoirs and the other 22% from boreholes and aquifers. Yorkshire Water operates more than 700 water and waste water works and manages 60,000km of water and sewerage mains – enough pipework to circulate the earth twice!
BACKGROUND
Through an existing customer, Yorkshire Water was recommended to SICL to contribute to the Yorkshire Water ‘Core Network Project’, a critical development for the organisation.
APPROACH
SICL provided Cisco Design resources and a PRINCE2™ Practioner as Project Manager to lead Yorkshire Water and other Technical Resources whilst designing and planning the project. SICL integrated into Yorkshire Water’s Technical Management, Engineering and Support teams for the duration of the project. During this time the project was planned using the PRINCE2™ methodology for planning, documentation, work packages, risk-management, issues, tolerances and budgetary control. SICL’s approach to Technical Management has proven to be successful due to the Project Managers being experienced Technicians first and foremost before qualifying in Project Management.
RESULTS
Yorkshire Water and SICL’s strategic partnership ensured that the project was completed successfully within budget and time tolerances. The project objectives were fully achieved and in some cases surpassed, with SICL completing work via knowledge transfer to Yorkshire Water Technical staff.
‘’SICL are a local company who have quickly understood the importance Yorkshire Water places on partnership with other organisations. They are customer focused, responsive and have clearly demonstrated their capabilities on both planned and project work, and out of hours support. SICL are a good company to work with’’
